The same scenario seems a far cry now. So many possibilities play out! If a man bumps into a woman, in all probability it was intentional to ‘correct’ or ‘collect’! Sorry those are the words being used to strike up conversation with women these days! Even if it wasn’t, the woman gets to hear a rude ‘Hey are you friggin’ blind?’ or ‘Watch where you are going babe’. I can’t also rule out the possibility of the woman letting loose some choicest of expletives like ‘you clumsy Klutz’ or ending with a tight whack! The man in turn swearing to take revenge! And it goes on and on! Nothing ending in romance! Possibilities are endless!
Chivalry, graciousness, courtesy, gallantry, politeness, basically good manners have all become a thing of the past! Something the early 18th and 19th century Earls, knights and nobles bestowed on their women! Being a writer of romance I say this with much regret. There were good old times when a man would open doors and hold out chairs for women, they’d button their suits and graciously stand and request women for a dance, they’d get up to acknowledge them. It is indeed shocking but men actually used perfectly correct and beautifully worded full English sentences, they were polite, courteous and good-hearted, they’d bow, smile and be charming, again all for the women. They’d woo their women with passion which they’d wear on their personality. Women looked forward to these qualities and admired and respected men for them. Love was something that made people blush. Holding hands was enough to express one’s feelings. A lot was expressed in a silent glance. There was a lot of giving, and for taking it came automatically without asking or demanding.
I say this with a lot of sighing and much regret, both the sexes have become somewhat of loose cannons now! The other day I saw a young couple walking on the beach. Somebody’s dog tore away from its leash and started running towards the couple. The young man turned and ran in the opposite direction and the woman made a beeline for the nearest gate! The dog ignored both of them and was too busy embracing its freedom. While the scene in retrospect sounds funny makes me wonder if a truly chivalrous man would dump his lady like that! Or if a gracious woman would think of herself alone.
I don’t have answers! I probably belong to a different era! Since I am not, all I can do is sigh and reach for the remote to watch black and white era movies where such men and women existed!
