Now, with the experience of life behind me, I believe education serves to elevate us to achieve our goals, helps us make informed decisions, make us knowledgeable and aware of things around us, enables the ability to discriminate between right and wrong, possibly help us find a job to live a life. But it doesn’t necessarily make you who you are! That’s up to you!
I was recently at the lounge of this sky-scraper with offices on higher floors. The lounge led into this humongous arcade of lifts, elevators, escalators and staircases that led people to various floors of the said office. I saw numerous people milling about either going up or coming down.
Some people took the stairs, some the lift, some the escalators, some took the lift that had glass on all sides and hence they had a view of the huge lounge as they went up.
The busy ones took the closed lift and had eyes only on the display board at the top that mentioned the floor number. They had eyes only at the destination and nothing else.
The ones who were speaking on the mobs took the escalators. They wanted good network at the same time get to their destination.
Some took the glass elevators that had a view. They did not want to be fixated on their destinations; they wanted to enjoy their ride up, by looking at the view the glass elevator offered but wanted to get up there soon too.
Still others took the stairs, slogged their way up, but they knew they were in the right direction; they had the satisfaction of working their way up on their terms, even if it meant taking some extra time.
After going up, some want to stay up there, they like the view from there and never want to leave. Some decide they want to try the height for sometime and then decide to try another building, something higher perhaps and another view. Yet others move a few floors down as they think that suits them.
I couldn’t help but use this to explain the concept of ‘being educated’.
Going up using the elevator or lift or stairs is educating yourself using whatever options there are to reach a goal in your life or reach a particular place. The floors denote your destination. Everybody uses the elevator or stairs of education to get to the floor of destination which is the goal of their choice.
Looking at all those people going up, the ‘truly educated’ is one who never forgets where he came from and is grounded in every sense of the world. He is one who is on the top, but is ‘down to earth’. He never loses his sense of self or direction on the way up or down. He enjoyed going up and was fully aware of it. He is the one who has liberated his mind from being fixated only on the top and revels in this fact. His priorities are a balance of work and life. He has a calming effect on the co-passengers in his life and doesn’t feel threatened by their growth. In fact he is willing to go up and down using the elevator or the stairs to help others find their way up. He rests assured in the fact that wherever he is, he knows who he is, where he is and what he is likely to be no matter how the odds are! That in my humble opinion is true education!
So which floor are we on? How educated are we….
