One tends to get carried away when we see the hero in movies achieve the impossible within the span of a song. But real life is not exactly a swan song. Such movies only tend to make us feel worse. Seeing his long-standing tumultuous relationship with gravity my friend decided to take control - one day at a time, one step at a time. He set goals for a daily basis. Today I will work out for an hour, I will eat appropriately and sensibly and I will stand up to extreme temptation. I know for a fact that he didn’t do crash diets or stay away interminably from all kinds of food. He ate in moderation and at the end of the day he asked himself, have I fulfilled my goals for today, everyday for a year. He ensured his answer was always a yes. One can set all kinds of goals, but it ultimately depends on how badly you want something for yourself. The idea is to sustain the process.
He knew the road was an uphill one and fraught with many temptresses, in the form of those dying taste buds begging to be compensated, that dark chocolate in the fridge that beckoned, that luscious Rasamalai that mocked at a wedding dinner, a friend who threw a booze party for his so-called dear friends, a bad day at work, depressing balance sheet, dwindling sums in the account statement, the multitude bills waiting to be paid… I can go on and on. There are million reasons to give up, but just one not to; that you owe it to yourself. And my friend chose the latter. He could have chosen to seek comfort in food and binge eating like we all end up doing. But he chose to fight that.
While the results are there now for all to see in the form of the unbelievable ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures, what I choose to see are hard work, determination and tremendous will power. I see the months of toil, pain, sweat and several nights of going to bed with aches and pains. It has all been worth it he says with a smile that had been lost but has found its way back.
I hope this inspires many out there to find it in them. Trust me, it is there, we just need to find it!
