December 2015! A time every Chennaiite will remember for life, a time when floods wreaked havoc and many an unfortunate life was washed away. But Chennai, that rose like the Phoenix, gathering her people, helping the less fortunate ones in a wave, standing up to the might of nature, saw the true spirit that encapsulates what it truly is, a shining beacon for eons to come. Mankind will forever remember this city for showing the world the true meaning and essence of being a Chennaiite.
There are lessons to be learnt from every experience, good or bad, they say. Chennai floods brought everybody down on our knees, teaching us all a few valuable life lessons which we will forever enshrine in our hearts.
To start off, one has to quote Samuel Colleridge – Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink! All had ATM cards but nowhere to draw cash from. Many had money to buy goods to stock up but nothing was available. Cars lined up outside petrol pumps but no gas. We had every possible gadget but no power to run even a single one. We had laptops and ipads but no connectivity. Iphones and smartphones but no wifi and network.
‘After the floods’ is an anthology of short stories by 21 bloggers of the Chennai Bloggers club to bring out some of the stories based on the December floods. Some of these are true stories, some based on those heard and some imaginary with the setting of floods. The common thread being the flood and some valuable lessons learnt.
What worked and powered us through were the kind hearts and the benevolent souls that rescued us, took us in, gave us shelter. The ultimate lesson being we need people, not materialistic things that are useless at a time like this.
So here are the valuable lessons gleaned!
