The area in particular that leaves me so baffled is their whole attitude towards falling in love. Boy meets girl, boy thinks the girl’s smile is cute, the girl thinks the boy’s biceps are appealing. I am in between with my notepad and virtual magnifying glass trying to understand how the ‘falling in love’ happens. Maybe it is just physical? Let me observe.
I look at the guy, he looks like he is just out of school, but his facial hair speaks otherwise! To me it is screaming for a razor! But apparently it is the ‘grunge’ look that is umm…well…attractive to the girls. Same for that beehive he has inverted on his head for which he probably paid a bomb in the hip-hop saloons where you hear a few snip, snips and suddenly they are fawning over their ‘creation’, which in my opinion reminds me of cotton candy! ‘Unkempt’ is the word that creeps into my head, but hey, love is blind they say! And one ought not to judge a person by his looks. So what if he is in a shabby checked three-fourths and a crinkled tee, that hasn’t heard of an iron box and flip flops? I am from a different era where men and women took the effort to present themselves nicely to each other. And the biceps in question seemed more like way too much whey protein and steroids to someone who has known many hours in the gym.
But coming back, I turned to the girl now. She looked about 16 or 17, in jeans that looked more like it had been painted on her, and a top that probably needed a metre or two more to cover her gaping belly button. A tattoo of some insect was on one arm. Somehow the word ‘scrawny’ leapt out of mine for this one. She looked anorexic and like she hadn’t eaten for at least the last five years of her life! Her favourite, but to me acutely annoying gesture seemed to be flicking back the hair falling on her forehead with her fingers and constantly running her fingers through her hip length hair. The practical Mother in me wondered why can’t she just put a clip and keep it away from her forehead or better tie it up in a pony. Anyway, while flicking her hair I caught sight of long nail painted in all the shades of nail polish possible. This one too was in flip flops. What got to me was when the girl smiled! I couldn’t miss the glint of the braces! I wanted to put my head down and bang the table repeatedly and say - So much for cute smile and sexy biceps!
I couldn’t for the life of mine figure out where the attraction had sprung from? While I was still trying to figure this out the young couple ‘hung out’ for a while in gaming zones, malls and coffee pubs. Within a month they had ‘moved on’ to others. And I am still none the wiser!
