I try to rationalise it with the thought that it perhaps has to do with man’s participation in the so-called rat race. In this so-called race we have come to call our life, on our tracks we tend to focus on people running with us, gauging their strengths in a bid to possibly outrun them. What we are actually doing is trying to network and upgrade our net worth! Unconsciously we have come to perceive, slot and relate people as ‘mere important contacts’ who possibly will be of some help or use to us in the near future. From that point of view our courtesies, niceties, and charm buttons are switched on for strangers who possibly view you as such too. The human antenna sizes up a person and allocates the appropriate behavior to them with super efficiency thanks to new demands of survival!
In all this kind of networking we have perhaps forgotten the art of relating to people as just that! People! Warm, simple people, with unique sensibilities, interests, who simply put, enjoy your company; admire you for who you are, Period! Rather than what you are and what you can do for them. It’s quid pro quo all the way!
I come to the most pertinent part. Why not accord the people who are a natural and sublime part of our lives, the value of our time, thought or effort? We are continually uplifted, inspired, motivated thanks to a handful of them. These are the silent workers who work in the wings so you can put your best foot forward. We don’t acknowledge these people because they are already part of our lives and we have possibly achieved our end with them. Hence the effort that goes into cultivating them, in our perception is redundant. The rationale would perhaps have to trace its origins to the fact that something, anything has our interest and attention sustained on it till the time we realize it. The mind is perhaps conditioned to ‘move on’ as soon as the realization part is done. Why waste our time and effort on something that is already in the kitty?
Stop in your tracks and spare a few moments to look around you people! The ones who actually count, the ones who are actually with you in your race are there behind you, urging you silently to your goal, your destination, never expecting anything from you. Its time we acknowledge them! We owe them that much at least!
The tireless people deserve at least a smile!
