A woman, the so-called Creator of life, the strength and care-giver, the nurturer and nourisher, the torch-bearer of a new generation, someone who is supposedly revered in our country as Shakthi, the life force is so brazenly and shockingly brutalized! She stands filled with shame, her spirit broken, her eyes downcast, her honour in tatters and her esteem in smithereens around her. She could be our daughter, our sister, a wife, a mother or even a little child! But she is still a potential rape victim!
And all we can do is be outraged, hold demonstrations, have more candle-light vigils, have more discussions in the parliament! Soon it will just pass and become another statistic! And we’d all go back to our daily lives. There is no point in expressing intentions and crying hoarse from roof tops unless it culminates into some kind of formidable action! Where is the damned action? Why does this keep happening? Doesn’t it break our spirits to read young children and women being raped just because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?
Isn’t it disgusting that we have to think of teaching our boys not to rape!
It is my opinion some kind of fear has to be instilled! Fear of macabre consequences! Nothing else will do! A man will have to think twice before he even thinks of coming near a woman! That’s what we need!
Can we not just put in place such laws but actually implement them? Will our policy and law makers finally actually do something instead of just giving moralistic grave interviews? Can we in a democracy enforce protection for the better half of the population? Can we channelize our sense of outrage into something useful so that our sensitivity levels don’t get numbed? Can we take up cudgels for our life-givers?
I am asking each and every one of you, CAN’T WE???
