I remember my music teacher’s avid expression as she told us the story of Thumbelina, a tiny baby who was so tiny that her cradle was a walnut shell! My eyebrows would go up in wonderment trying to imagine something so tiny!
This song came to me today after nearly 35 years after I saw my cousin’s newborn tiny bundle of joy! When I laid my eyes on her, I knew yes, a baby IS indeed really that tiny but it fills your heart with something huge and humongous that it actually moves us! I actually felt 9 ft tall!
What is it about this small, tiny thing that just lies there all bundled up, scrunching up its face and screeching, innocently but very vehemently demanding the immediate attention of everybody around it?
What is it about this very tiny thing that makes your heart overwhelmingly overcome with raw emotions you never thought you were capable of feeling, or had inside you!
Why do we feel this blissful light heartedness, like you were on this cottony cloud floating gently up there, feeling weightless, with the breeze gently lifting you up to see the stars twinkling merrily lighting up the skies?
What is this indescribable joy that blooms in our heart just at the mere sight of the tiny delicate fingers and toes all curled up? The sheer ecstasy of seeing that miniscule frown between the soft feather like brows focussing seriously on sleeping!
No doubt tiny babies bring out the Shakespeare or Milton in us! Have we ever wondered why?
I think it’s the miracle of new life, not just created, but right there in front of you! Like seeing the first shoot from a tiny seed. The magic of holding the next generation in your hands, so small, so frail, so innocent, so trusting and lying completely assured that she is in safe hands. It is trembling with anticipation at the path filled with responsibilities you are going to forge with this new life, all your hopes, your joy, your life-breath, your flesh and blood carried forward in this small bundle! It is the new joy, meaning and purpose that she is going to bring to your life.
It is knowing that here is a piece of you for this world, a new identity, a new relationship that you will go on to cherish for your lifetime!
Above all, it’s the wonder of nature and God’s creation that nourishes your very soul and tells you, here’s your purpose. Live on!
